1 John 2:24-27

Good question. We are in first John chapter 2. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning We're gonna be looking at first John first John chapter 2 and we're gonna be looking at verses 24 through 27 there's something that's supposed to live in you I Wonder what it is So first John chapter 2 while Deborah's turning there have some coffee.
We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word. I Let's pray. Oh, she's almost there. It's going to take a long time. It's towards the end of the Bible, right before Revelation. The only thing between 1 John and Revelation is Jesus' brother. The second one mentioned.
All right, let's pray. God, we thank you so much for this day. Thank you for the blessing it is to get to read your word. We pray that your spirit would be working with us now, working in us, that we would love you and we would walk in your ways. In Jesus' name we pray, amen. All right, here we go. 1 John 2, verses 24 through 27. How about you read 24 and 25? Okay.
Therefore, let that abide in you which you have heard from the beginning. If what you have heard from the beginning abides in you, you will also abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that He has promised us, eternal life. These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. But the anointing which you have received from Him who abides in you, and you do not, uh, but you do not need that anyone teach you, but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and it is true, and it is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in him. Okay, so we got our A, what's this? About. B, what's the? Best verse to summarize. And C? What are we called to do? Good.
So he just talked about the deceptions that will come in the last hour, people who will deny the Son, people who will leave them and show that they were never a part of them. And so like people leaving the church because they got these crazy ideas about who Jesus was or wasn't, right? And so now he's saying those are the Antichrist, right?
And now he's saying, Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning What do you think it was from the beginning that he's talking about? Like when you were first safe Okay, well yeah, so maybe, so you're thinking about like Revelation with your first love, right? You forget your first love. I think he's more talking about what he was saying at the beginning here, right?
God is light and in him there is no darkness at all, and that our only hope is in that Jesus will cleanse us from our sins, right? That Jesus came in the flesh, right? I think those are the things that they heard in the beginning, the good news, the gospel, at the heart of the good news, and that we should walk in the light as he is in the light. Those types of things that he's already covered. And so he's saying, let that abide in you which you have heard from the beginning. And if you've heard that in the beginning, and if you love God, and the love of God abides in you, you will also abide in what?
The Son and the Father. Yeah, right. Not just in the Son, but you will also abide in the Father. So, like, remaining in. You'll find your home in, right? That's where you'll rest. And this is the promise that He has promised us. What does He promise us? Eternal life. Where did Jesus ever promise eternal life? When did God say that? When did the Father ever say that? Or when did the Son ever say that? It's kind of like tied into like everything in the Bible.
Well, yeah. But even Jesus, right? Though you die, you will surely live. And right, even Jesus saying, right, where I'm going, you cannot follow, but I'm going to my Father's house. And in His house, there are many rooms. If it were not so, I would have told you, but I go ahead to prepare a way for you.
We have an abode with God. But we can go even all the way back to the book of Genesis and the covenant of life. In the first estate where God made man, there's a special act of providence. Sound familiar? Like a catechism question we're working on right now? Maybe. And in that original state, in the special act of providence, God made a promise to them. Right? There was a promise of life. Forever.
As long as they didn't do what? Eat from the tree of knowledge and get out. Of good and evil. But of course, what do they do? Exactly what I would have done. Every time I sin, it shows that I have the same type of fallen appetites. Every time I eat too much ice cream, enjoy Pizza Ranch just a little bit too much. Right? But the point being is that, no, hold on. There was a promise of life, but we lost it. But who gives us it? Who restores it? Jesus. Jesus does. That's right. Uh-oh. And so, her Bible fell.
And so, he says, right, these things I have written to you, verse 26, concerning those who try to deceive you, right? There are people who are going to, even today, Deborah, did you know there are people who will downplay sin? They'll say, hey, God just loves you so much.
All that sin stuff, that's all Old Testament, that's all law, that's not a part of Jesus, right? God's not concerned about those types of things. He's worried about grace, grace, and more grace. It's not about how you walk. You can be carnal. God knows that you're in the flesh and you're going to sin. And he still died for you. So don't worry about your sin. Sounds appealing, doesn't it? There are lots of antichrists around. Yeah. Like... I got a frog in my throat. No. Okay. So? Like Joseph Smith. Yeah. All sorts of people who try to corrupt who Jesus was, change who Jesus was, make up stories about Jesus, or will be antinomians.
Say that the law doesn't matter at all anymore, and they don't read things like, walk in the light, as he is in the light. If you walk in the darkness, and love the darkness, right? How's the love of God abide in you? And so he says, I'm writing to you so that you're not deceived. He says, you don't need anybody to teach you these things. You've known them. Is he trying to say you don't ever need a Bible teacher? No. Is he trying to say you never need to read a commentary? No. What's he saying? He's saying that in our hearts we know it is true.
Yeah, right. It's the love of God abides in you. If you're one of Jesus' children, you have almost this innate sense sometimes like, Something's off here. I drink a little bit of the drink, but there's poison in that. That well's bad. I'm not going there. If you get a little sense of that, you listen a little bit, right? You be like the Bereans. You go and you check it against the scriptures. Is this true? Is this right? Is this according to the Bible? And if it's not, what do you do?
Bye bye. That's right. All right. So that's the Holy Spirit who's anointed you with that type of understanding. But as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. So we can rest in Him. We hold to the truth. We trust in him.

What verse would you underline? 27. Okay. That's actually very long. Yeah, this is a long verse, that's fine. I would actually underline verse 24 myself, but that's fine.
Let's go ahead and talk about seek calling, right? What's God calling you to do today? You're going to walk out of this house, you're going to go to school. What are you called to do? Know what's right and wrong. Just good old morals. We just watched The Time Changer, Dad. Okay, so it's not just about morals apart from Christ. You have to have morals in Christ. Yeah, so maybe, instead of just no right from wrong, abide in Jesus. Yeah, right, you don't want to just abstract morals because that just leaves you with, well, the morals can be compromised. But you abide in Jesus, and you walk in His footsteps. Yeah. Boom. You want to pray or you want me to pray? You would like me to pray? Okay. God, thank you so much for this day.
We pray that we would walk in your footsteps. Lord, even though we have not seen your son, yet we love him. We know that he did come in the flesh. And Father, we pray that we would walk in the light as he is in the light. Lord, we pray that you would turn us away from our sins and let us trust in you. Please care for us, Lord. Let us follow in your ways and walk in your paths. Let us abide in you. In Jesus's name, amen. Well, may you walk in the joy and peace of Jesus Christ. May you walk in his ways as a great shepherd of the sheep leads you. And we'll see you next time.
